Legion Established in 1928
The American Legion Children Home was established in
1928 with the land and funds for the first building
donated by E.W. Maryland. It was established to be an
orphanage for children of veterans who could not provide
care to their children.
The home now has four
dormitories, a recreational facility/cafeteria, a
classroom/administrative building and several staff
residences. The home provides services to children ages
11 to 18 years.
These individuals are classified
as deprived, neglected or abused.
Priority
placement is given to those children who are descendants
of American veterans. All residents are encouraged to
participate in school, religious and community actives.
Residents over 16 years participate in an independent
living program designed to prepare them for a successful
integration in the adult community of their choosing.
Students are also encouraged to consider attending
college after their high school graduation with guidance
being offered regarding college placement requirements
and opportunities. The children are also provided with
weekly counseling and therapy sessions.
Family
therapy is provided for these children and their
families as well as any extended families if it is
possible to reunify the child with his/her family.
The home also provides 24-hour awake supervision for
the children, employing roundthe- clock aides in all
buildings.
An equine program has also been added
and several citizens in Ponca City have donated items to
the program.
